AI-powered tools for writers
Today I'm exploring a new AI tool called TextFX for writers.
TextFX is an AI experiment that uses Google's PaLM 2 large language model designed to expand the writing process by generating creative possibilities with text and language.
Looks like they partnered with the rapper Lupe Fiasco - he does tutorials on how to use the tool which is nice.
Reading time: 2 minutes
There are the following categories
Simile: Create a simile about a thing or concept.
Explode: Break a word into similar-sounding phrases.
Unexpect: Make a scene more unexpected and imaginative.
Chain: Build a chain of semantically related items.
POV: Evaluate a topic through different points of view.
Alliteration: Curate topic-specific words that start with a chosen letter.
Acronym: Create an acronym using the letters of a word.
Fuse: Find intersections between two things.
Scene: Generate sensory details about a scene.
Unfold: Slot a word into other words or phrases.
Trying it out
I’m hungry so I typed “ramen” for simile.
Then I tried out alliteration. I used the prompt “things related to technology” with words that start with the letter M.
Then I went to Fuse for intersecting two ideas. I typed “apple” and “spaceship” to see what it would give us.

Impressions
Overall this is a really cool tool. The UIs are lovely. I think you could technically type all of this into Claude or ChatGPT, but what I love about TextFX is that it effectively guides you.
Sometimes it’s not apparent about what to write in the moment and this tool serves more as an ideation platform for when you’er stuck.
I’ll definitely be bookmarking this.
